Dr. Augustine Francis Pinto, widely known as Dr. A.F. Pinto, is one of India's most celebrated and influential educationists. He is the Founder and Chairman of the Ryan International Group of Institutions, one of the largest and most respected private school networks in India. Born into a modest farming family near Mangalore, Karnataka on 28 August 1944, Dr. Pinto spent his life proving that vision, faith, and hard work could transform a single classroom into a national educational institution. Starting with a capital of just ten thousand rupees and a batch of thirty-six students, he built a school network that today operates more than 135 institutions across 18 Indian states, serving over 250,000 students annually through 16,000+ educators and producing approximately 30,000 graduates each year.

Dr. A.F. Pinto was born on 28 August 1944 in a small village approximately ten kilometres north of Mangalore city, in the coastal state of Karnataka, India. He was raised in a Mangalorean Catholic farming family where the values of faith, hard work, and simplicity were the pillars of daily life. Though his family lived with modest means, they placed an unusually strong emphasis on the education of their children, believing firmly that learning was the most reliable path to a better life.

After excelling in his early schooling in the Mangalore region, Dr. Pinto made the bold decision to travel to Chennai to pursue undergraduate education at one of the country's most prestigious colleges. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Loyola College, Chennai, in 1969. The Jesuit philosophy of educating the whole person, not merely the intellect but also the conscience and character, left a lasting impression that would define the philosophy of every school he built.

In 1974, Dr. Pinto married Grace Albuquerque, a trained teacher with a passion for Mathematics and Science. Their marriage was not only a personal union but a professional partnership of rare depth. Dr. Grace Pinto, as she came to be known, became the co-founder and Managing Director of the Ryan International Group of Institutions. She has been recognised with numerous national and international awards for her contributions to education, women's empowerment, and elder care.

The couple has two children. Their son, Ryan Pinto, completed his Master of Business Administration from London and returned to India to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ryan Group, widely credited with leading the group's expansion into international markets and modernising its operations. The Ryan International Group of Institutions is named after their son Ryan, reflecting the deeply personal nature of the family enterprise from its very beginning. Their daughter, Roshelle Pinto, has also been associated with the family's educational activities.

The pivotal moment of Dr. Pinto's career came when he encountered Mrs. Sequeira, an elderly school principal who travelled by bullock cart from house to house in Mumbai's suburbs to persuade parents to send their children to her tiny school, which had started with just twelve students in a single room. Moved by her selfless dedication, Dr. Pinto resolved to pursue a similar path. He resigned from his clerical position and began teaching at a primary school in Malad, Mumbai.

In 1976, two years after his marriage, Dr. Pinto and Dr. Grace Pinto pooled their savings and founded Father Agnelo Primary School in Borivali, Mumbai, with ₹10,000 in capital and thirty-six students. In 1983, he founded St. Xavier's High School in Borivali East, Mumbai, with the assistance of Anthony Silva Pinto. This institution became the foundation upon which the Ryan International Group of Institutions was built.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, the Ryan International Group grew at a remarkable pace, with Dr. Pinto carefully selecting locations in rapidly urbanising suburbs where middle-class families were eager for good schooling. He introduced both state board and CBSE curricula, and over time added international curriculum streams. The group has also established school campuses in the United Arab Emirates.

Today, the Ryan International Group of Institutions operates more than 135 schools across 18 Indian states, employing over 16,000 educators, serving approximately 250,000 students, and producing more than 30,000 graduates each year. Dr. Pinto describes his entire educational mission as a divine calling, in his words, forty years ago God planted a seed in his heart and directed him to spread affordable, quality English-medium education within Indian society.

Dr. A.F. Pinto is a deeply religious man who has consistently attributed every achievement of his life to divine guidance. He leads a quietly private personal life that reflects the simplicity of his Mangalorean roots. Those who have worked closely with him describe a leader of discipline, warmth, and genuine humility who treats every interaction with a student or teacher as an opportunity to serve.

Dr. Pinto and Dr. Grace Pinto are actively involved in philanthropic work, with a particular focus on empowering women and providing support to senior citizens. The couple received the Help Age Excellence Award for their sustained contributions to elder welfare. Dr. Pinto is also known for his environmental consciousness, reflected in the Ryan Group's receipt of the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Environment.
